Great Taste Awards: What Do the Stars Mean?
AN INDEPENDENT GUIDE TO FLAVOUR
Small stars. A meaningful recommendation.
Seen a Great Taste badge on a jar or packet? Here is what its rating tells you when choosing food for your table or a thoughtful gift.
What is Great Taste?
Great Taste is a food and drink award scheme organised by the Guild of Fine Food. Entries are blind-tasted by expert judges, so the assessment focuses on the food itself. Successful products receive one, two or three stars.
What do the stars mean?
1 star
Simply delicious
A delicious product recognised for its flavour.2 stars
Outstanding
A step further in flavour, balance and character.3 stars
Exquisite
The scheme’s highest star rating for exceptional taste.Read the badge: stars and year
The official award logo identifies both the star rating and the judging year. The award belongs to the specific product entered. Check the product’s own badge and description when shopping; a brand’s award does not automatically apply to everything it sells.
An award can help you discover a new flavour. Your own preferences still matter: consider the product’s ingredients, origin, texture, flavour notes and how you plan to serve it.

Frequently asked questions
Is a one-star award still a good result?
Yes. One star is an award in its own right and recognises a delicious product.
Are these customer review stars?
No. Great Taste stars come from the scheme’s judging process. Customer reviews are shown separately on our product pages.
